Psychotherapy is the treatment for a range of mental health related issues like moods, anxiety, post traumatic stress, or interpersonal concerns, in which a trained person establishes a professional relationship with a client. The object of this is to reduce existing symptoms and improve disturbing patterns of thoughts and behaviours. The ultimate goal of psychotherapy is promoting mental health and growth.
The number of sessions recommended depends upon the nature of the issue, the level of impairment experienced, along with your own motivation and compliance to treatment.
Sessions are usually 50 minutes in duration. The first couple of sessions focus on getting a clearer understanding of your concerns, past and current circumstances. A treatment plan will be shared subsequently. These sessions also provide an opportunity to know one another and develop a professional working relationship.
Assistance is offered for a broad range of concerns such as:
Anxiety and mood disorders
Learning disabilities
Childhood behaviour problems
Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)
Social skills training
Trauma
Anger management issues
Adjustment problems
Pain management
Grief & loss
Mental health & well being
A psychological assessment is usually conducted following concerns raised by parents, family doctors, teachers or paediatricians regarding the behaviour of the child. A psychological assessment process involves a comprehensive developmental history, parent interview, and assessment sessions with your child.
An assessment may help in identifying and diagnosing mental health related issues. They also help in the selection of interventions and a course of treatment for children and adults.
Psycho-educational Assessments
Assessments for intellectual functioning, academic achievement and social-emotional functioning can be beneficial for identifying:
-
Education-related needs
-
Information on social & emotional functioning
-
Diagnostic information.
This helps in getting necessary support in the classroom and specific education placements.
With each psycho-educational assessment, I provide a profile of individual strengths and areas of opportunity, along with tailored recommendations to help attain success.
I am happy to consult with your child’s school and teachers to further ensure their success.
Giftedness Assessments
A giftedness assessment and report are required for admission to the Gifted and Talented Enrichment Program (GATE) of the Calgary Board of Education and the Westmount charter school program. Based on the Alberta education guidelines, the criteria for giftedness is an Intelligence Quotient (IQ) score of 130 (+ or – 5).
Please note: There is the option of two-tiered pricing. If your child’s test results do not meet the gifted criteria, there is an option of paying for the assessment only and not paying for the report. In either case, the results will be shared with you in a subsequent meeting.
Developmental Disabilities-Related Assessments
PDD (Persons with Developmental Disabilities) is a Government of Alberta initiative which funds programs and services for adults with developmental disabilities. The aim of these programs is to integrate individuals into their communities so that they can live as independently as possible. To apply for PDD funding, an intellectual and adaptive functioning assessment is required
Capacity Assessment is done to assess if an adult can make personal and financial decisions and exercise judgement to understand consequences.
